It’s not a plot hole – the answer is actually in the film. Nero tells Captain Pike that his purpose “is not simply to avoid the destruction of the home that I love, but to create a Romulus that exists free of the Federation”. He intends to use his ship to destroy every Federation planet and then, presumably, use the Red Matter to destroy the star that will eventually go super-nova.

Maureen, I no longer work at DADA so I can’t help you there with getting a hold of Oli, but I’d have to say I’ve had some fantastic nights in Sloans over the years. Also, the 10pm rule for under-18s that you mention on your blog: I’ve seen that enforced in many a place, especially over the last few weeks as I’ve had my five year old daughter out at a few parties.

I´m not in PR but I do have a PR-related issue concerning Oli Norman. I´ve outlined the core of my discrepancies with the owner of Sloans (why oh why don´t they put an apostrophe on just to make me happy?) in my blog, address below. However, the real issues are the following. Untruth. Accusations. Inadequate Consumer Care. Staff dubbed “managers” of one kind or another just because. Because Oli was off somewhere enjoying a night off. Patronising, apparently touchy-feely “feedback” poses when in fact, the age old iron-grip fist wrapped itself around my money despite outrageous circumstances. Could you advise or even sympathise?

Also does that mean that if the “new” Kirk and Spock time travel back before their time line splintered say to the 1980’s or 60s they could pontentially run into their other selves. In fact as time travel has created so many “other” universes Kirk and Spock should be running into themselves all the time. The temporal time Police from the 27th century really screwed up here, as they should have prevented Nero and Spock travelling in time at all.

Gearoid, Happy New Year to you. The freeloader site only wins out there if people actually click the adverts but most people don’t. The rough anecdotal figure that goes around is that you need a minumum of 100 online viewers on a free site to compare to one print reader, so work the figures out from there.

I can’t see most countries putting up firewalls like you suggest – and I certainly wouldn’t want to see blockages – but at the end of the day it’s a struggle for many sites to operate proper news journalism when there’s so little financial incentive (and yes, news shouldn’t be about profit, but that’s the world we are in).

Hmm , Craig are you from a news background?
Im not , Im just a run of the mill reader and even I know that if you have one site getting 100,000 free loader hits , and another getting 500 payiing people , the freeloader site is by far way more profitable from advertising revenue
Murdoch and his ilk are the analogue dinosuars being washed away by a digital meteor hit and I’m loving every minute of it.
The only way this would ever work is if countries operate what would in fact be a national intranet, much like in china has, where all sites are monitored and ‘unapproved ‘ ones are blocked.. Are you sure you want to do down that route ? Sure you would see your profits go up but at what cost ?

Here is my issue, when the ships enter from the black whole is the only time that they generate the “lightning storm in space thing” right? Well supposedly that is what is relayed back to starfleet from vulcan and what leads Kirk to believe that the rescue mission to vulcan is actually a trap. See the issue. By this time everybody has already arrived through the black hole. THERE WOULD BE NO STORM!!!!!

Also, a note on all the coincidences, such as the three unlikely meeting on Delta Vega and Kirk’s rather improbable rise to the command of the Enterprise. JJA said in an interview that he also cut scenes for time in which the characters speculate that the change in the timeline was a wound that the universe was trying to heal by getting its players back in their proper places. Sure, you could ask “but what about those 6 billion dead Vulcans?” Well, quit asking questions!

i agree with a lot of what’s been said here. i had a great many wtf moments in the film. i still loved it better than all of them except khan.

i found out recently that nero had been captured and tortured by klingons in a sequence that was cut. it’s when he lost the top of his ear and where he got the truth slugs. makes me wonder what else happened in those 25 years. i had a lot of trouble making sense of his motives as well, but maybe he went a little batty, what with the torture and the waiting and the dead wife and whatnot. so maybe his motives just don’t make sense because he’s crazy. maybe he did warn romulus, but then thought that just to be safe he should wipe out the whole federation so that the empire could flourish.

It may be that he didn’t die, but that was the meaning I took from the end of it. As to where he ended up, I assumed it was Highgate, but if you read into it, there isn’t really one place more than another that Robert seemed really happy. He’s a very passive character for a lot of the book.

And I hadn’t thought of the notion of her being “trapped”. That’s an interesting take on it. Good spot.

Craig, we met and spoke many years ago via a Celtic mailing lhist … I became a father for the first time this year at the grand old age of 39 after many years of trying and ultimately the rocky road of IVF … we worked hard for Fraser and now he’s going to get the best of me for as long as I’m capable of giving it .

I totally get everything on this post and will be following from now on …

Like Dogbone, I’m kinda stuck on the timeline of the event horizon. The “blackhole” took 25 years to get through, right? But if Nero and Spock entered it only seconds or minutes apart, does that mean Nero took 25 years but Spock took 50 years to get through it?

Is Old Spock now stuck 129 years in the past, forced to relive that timeframe again, but old? Or perhaps I should say he is living an alternate past now.
